YouTube to launch paid subscription channels soon

According to the Financial Times, YouTube is to launch its paid subscription channels very soon.
The new service has been rumored for quite some time now, but it looks like the wait is finally about to end. The publication claims that there will be about 50 different 'specialist' channels offering paid content, but we guess many more will get added to the list as time goes on (and as YouTube sees that the model is working).

It also turns out that the price will be quite affordable, with prices said to be starting at 'as little as $1.99 a month'. However, 'starting at' does mean that there will be more expensive packages, so it'll be interesting to see exactly what we're going to get for $1.99 a month and for the more expensive options.

Apparently, Google has confirmed its interest in offering paid content on YouTube, but hasn't directly confirmed the upcoming announcement. Of course, Google's take on all this is that paid subscriptions will allow content creators to bring even better videos to YouTube, and that's something users will be happy to pay for. Who knows?! It may or it may not work. Many entities have tried to revolutionize TV and transform it into something a bit more '21st century', but to no avail. Will YouTube prove to be just as stubborn as good old TV? Hopefully, we'll know soon enough!
